Venture Capital U.S. Investments A
prominent, privately held, New Zealand Group wished to geographically
diversity its investments and gain access to promising new U.S.
technologies of possible application in the New Zealand market. After
reviewing alternatives, it invested, in a very tax efficient manner,
in a U.S. venture capital fund specializing in the industries of
interest. This led to business collaboration with Fund investee
companies for the New Zealand market. U.S. Merger An
Australian company privatized certain advanced Australian government
CSIRO technology used in road and railway line mapping, saving
significant cost. Customers were worldwide. Shortly after ‘flipping up’
to become a U.S. company (as a value enhancer prior to sale), a U.S.
public company made an all cash takeover offer, on attractive terms.
Partnership/licensing technology/collaboration
A multiple sector technology start-up
required help to generate an immediate revenue stream and reputable
first customer wins. Marquis Advisory Group members helped develop a
strategy and negotiate terms with a major multinational corporation to
license out a narrow sector of the technology so as to not restrict the
start-up from its core focus. This delivered a huge first win for the start-up as the agreement took advantage of
the benefits associated with a large multinational corporation with a
vested interested in the start-up’s intellectual property and thus the
ability to defend the IP whilst helping to keep them focused on their key areas. It also provided the start-up with the necessary income stream and a
large corporate partner for validation and credibility during
subsequent funding exercises. The complete package became an excellent
and timely PR story for the early stage company.
